About Selbytech

Experienced technology leadership for growing businesses

Selbytech is a small practice led by David Selby. We provide fractional CTO leadership to companies that have engineering teams, and Fractional CTO + Platform engagements to owner-led businesses that don’t, where EmpireVault, the platform we build, is included for the full term.

David Selby – Fractional CTO & Technology Leader

David Selby is an accomplished technology leader with over 15 years of experience delivering scalable cloud platforms, enterprise SaaS solutions, and AI-driven systems. His career spans director and vice president–level roles across global enterprises like Honeywell, high-growth startups, and SaaS companies. He specializes in translating business strategy into secure, resilient technical architectures that improve efficiency, enable automation, and support growth.

He holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) through Professional Engineers Ontario, a Certified SAFe Agilist, and earned an MBA from CTO Academy’s Digital MBA for Technology Leaders program in London, UK.

He helps technology-driven organizations bridge the gap between vision and execution by bringing seasoned technology leadership, strategic clarity, and operational discipline — without the cost of a full-time executive. Whether a company is transitioning from early product–market fit, preparing for fundraising, or overcoming scaling challenges, he works as a trusted leader who gets things done.

Professional Background

His career has been defined by building and leading technology teams through complex transformations in regulated, high-availability environments. Here are some of the highlights:

Honeywell — Director of Information Technology (2021–2023)

At Honeywell Corporate, he directed a geographically dispersed team of 26 members across the U.S., Mexico, India, Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. He drove a company-wide migration to ServiceNow that transformed customer service delivery and designed a comprehensive IT service catalog that produced an 80% SaaS margin increase. By optimizing resource sharing through vCenter APIs, he achieved $2M in direct cost savings. He also architected Remote Migration Services infrastructure that positioned the business to access a $700M annual market opportunity.

Honeywell — IT Management Principal (2018–2021)

Leading security for Honeywell’s SaaS energy management operations, he delivered flawless outcomes in four consecutive ISO 27001 audits. He grew adoption of the Virtual Engineering Platform (VEP) to over 40,000 virtual machines, enabling a net annual benefit of $300 million for the business. He directed a major data center migration to Equinix, transitioning from NSX-V to NSX-T, and developed an innovative cost redistribution system using Python and VMware vROps for on-demand SaaS billing.

Honeywell — IT Program Manager (2015–2018)

He secured a $5M SaaS contract with a major European utility through a micro-segmented deployment strategy for smart-meter portfolio optimization. He built a disaster recovery framework achieving a 2-hour RTO and 10-minute RPO for critical utility meter reading systems. He also championed the deployment of Honeywell’s public cloud Distributed Control System (DCS) — enabling digital twin technology — and pioneered one of the first five global VMware vSAN implementations.

DynamixE Inc. — VP Digital Solutions (2023–2025)

At DynamixE, he engineered Kubernetes-based architecture for web-deployed Ignition SCADA on Civo and GCP. He managed a $1.5M project deploying critical infrastructure for a cancer immunotherapy company and led a pilot with Pieces.app that increased development team efficiency by 30% through AI-Copilot adoption. He secured a strategic partnership with Civo for scalable SaaS infrastructure and architected a VMware alternative using Verge.io.

Why We Built EmpireVault

The businesses we lead needed one system for customers, support, scheduling, quotes, and email, and nothing on the market fit a twenty-person company’s needs or budget. So we built EmpireVault, and we now stand it up inside every Fractional CTO + Platform engagement, included for the full term. Because we build it, you should know two things: the engagement costs the same whether you keep EmpireVault afterwards or not, and if it is the wrong fit for your business we will say so and set you up on something that is.
